Thales of Mileus (contd.)
Geometry originated from Africa. Though the two words
that form Geometry are of Greek origin. They ‘geo’ and ‘metrein’.
‘Geo’ means earth and ‘metrein’ means to measure. Literally Geometry
means earths’ measurement.
It was being used by the ancient Greek ‘hapenodapta’
which can be described as nowadays Surveyors after the yearly Nile’s flood to
remark lands for farming.
Geometry to ancient Egyptians was at descriptive
stage. However, the Greeks introduced the rational methods that gave ‘Geometry’
its aesthetic beauty into it.
Thales of Miletus mentioned two days ago is
credited with the theorems listed below:
i.
A
circle is bisected by any diameter.
ii.
The
base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal.
iii.
The
angles between two intersecting straight lines are equal.
iv.
Two
triangles are congruent if they have two angles and one side equal.
v.
An
angle in a semicircle is a right angle.
We shall discuss more on this theorems and geometry per se
as the day goes by. Keep checking the blog.
À demain! Happy Weekend!!
